My journey

Like many others, I was never a sports star at school and only began exercising and using a gym, in my forties, when I realised I needed to lose weight. I started my fitness journey at a local leisure centre’s aerobics session before trying a range of different classes and then discovering a passion for lifting weights and running.
At the age of 50 I was encouraged by a trainer to take part in a kettlebell sport competition and won my first ever medal! That was followed by winning many more medals, breaking British records and eventually representing England at international level. As running is assistance work for Kettlebell Sport, I also ran two half marathons and still run 5K regularly in my 60s.
Needing more challenge, I changed direction in 2020 and began exploring powerlifting competing with some bigger weights! You are never too old to try something new.
Everyone’s journey is different, most people don’t want to compete, most people want to feel confident, fit and healthy. As you get older your strength and mobility naturally declines, most people want to manage this so they can enjoy life as they get older. All the above gives me understanding about how it feels to be a beginner and new to training as much as how to train at a high level. My skill set is very varied, which means I can adapt programs to meet individual needs and not simply stick to a pre-determined package. I do use some strength training with most people because research show it is especially beneficial for older clients as it maintains bone density and muscle strength.
I am a parent and grandparent and taught in primary schools for 32 years, retiring from teaching very recently. This gives me an understanding of the challenges of finding time to work, care for family and exercise. My teaching skills help me break new ideas into bite size pieces and support individuals to make progress at their own level.
